Spring Soccer

HCA Spring Soccer is a great program that provides kids from our community a chance to learn sportsmanship and basic soccer skills. Soccer nights include fun games and drills to practice entry level skills followed by an age-appropriate length game. In order to play, a youth’s home address must be associated with an active HCA Membership. They do not need to live in the community but must hold a valid HCA Membership. There is also a registration fee, an adult volunteer “cash or commitment” agreement, and a waiver required.

Our program runs on parent volunteers to act as Coaches, Team Managers, and Program Organizers. No previous experience or soccer knowledge is necessary, we will guide you! Please see below for a description of the various positions available. If you would like to learn more about the positions available or have any additional questions, please contact our Soccer Director, Trish Mochulski, at soccer@hawkwoodca.com

Volunteer Roles

Hawkwood Soccer relies on our parent volunteers to help deliver our program. It is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbours and other families in the community. There is absolutely no experience necessary, and we will provide you with all the information that you need to fulfill your role. If each of the roles below are not filled for the respective age groups, the program for that age group may not run, or will be run with the families that have chosen to volunteer if there are over 20 participants. The following roles are needed, and you will have an opportunity to select one (subject to availability) while registering:

Coaches (2 per team, as required)

Coaches lead the team in some drills and activities as well as help direct the game. There is no soccer knowledge needed, the only requirements are enthusiasm and an encouraging attitude! We will provide a coaching clinic to teach you some games to play with the kids as well as instructions on how to coach a game. Your main job will be to encourage players and try and make sure everyone has equal time on the field. For the younger age groups, you will mostly be reminding them which net they are trying to score on and encouraging them to chase the ball rather than butterflies. Each team will have two coaches, so you will always have someone to assist you.

Team Manager (1 per team, as required)

The team manager’s role is to help with team organization and communication. You will assist with occasionally sending out emails with team information, organizing the snack schedule, assisting with organizing the team for picture night, and distribution of uniforms and pictures. Most of the work takes place on the field with the occasional email being sent to the team throughout the season.

Equipment Coordinator (1 spot)

The equipment coordinator will work with the Soccer Director to prepare, organize and distribute the soccer equipment at the beginning of the season, and collect and organize the equipment at the end of the season.  You will be responsible for preparing the equipment bags before the season begins (with the help of the Soccer Coordinator), distributing the equipment on the first night of soccer, tracking broken/out of service equipment and collecting it on the last night of the season.

Equipment Aide (1 per team, as required)

Equipment aides are responsible for bringing equipment to the game each week. You will be responsible for setting up the nets and balls each week as well as taking them home and storing them during the week. You will ensure that equipment is in good conditions by inflating any flat balls and by contacting the soccer director if there is any equipment that need replacing. If you are unable to attend a game, you are in charge of coordinating another team member to be responsible for the equipment.

Picture Night Coordinator (1 spot)

The picture night coordinator will be responsible for organizing picture night. This includes working with the photographer to provide team rosters before picture night, coordinating with the team mangers to ensure that players’ names are correct, setting up and distributing the picture night timetable, coordinating the volunteers for picture night, helping with distribution of the pictures to the teams and assisting with any issues with pictures.

Picture Night Aides (4 spots)

Picture night aides assist the Picture Night Coordinator. You will help to organize teams on picture night and try and keep everyone on schedule. You will assist in gathering the teams together, providing them with the photographer’s instructions, and moving everyone through the process in an orderly manner.

Wrap Up Party Coordinator (1 spot)

The wrap up party coordinator will plan our season end party. You will be responsible for coordinating food purchases and preparation, planning and booking activities, organizing the distribution and collection of food tickets, and coordinating volunteers to assist with planning and running the event.

Wrap Up Party Planning Committee (3 spots)

The wrap up party planning committee will assist the wrap up party coordinator with the preparations for our season end party. You will be responsible for assisting with planning games, activities, food and entertainment.  You will assist with organizing purchases and preparation of items needed for the party and preparing information and instructions for the Wrap Up Party Aides to perform their duties on the party date.

Wrap Up Party Aides (6 spots)

Wrap up party aides assist the Wrap Up Party Coordinator with a variety of tasks related to the wrap up party. Tasks may include set up, food preparation, cooking, serving food, supervising/leading activities, and clean up.

Additional information

* All players require a parent or guardian to be present at each game, for the entire game.

* Shin pads are required for all players and are NOT provided.

* Simple, healthy snacks may be provided to the players at the end of each game as they give an added incentive for the kids to participate. A schedule may be set up at the beginning of the season for each player to sign up to take turns providing the snack – this will be decided upon by the Team Manager and parents.

* We cannot always meet requests to put children on teams with specific friends due to difficulties in ensuring each team has an equal range of experience level as well as enough volunteers. However, those who volunteer to help coach a team will get preferential treatment for having their requests met.

* Participants will receive an email in early-April with additional information regarding the 2024 season including what team players are on, as well as instructions for the first night of soccer.
